Veterans are selected through a variety of means such as: outreach, word of mouth, referrals, nominations, & collaborations with veteran focused organizations.

MVP considers anyone who has served in the CAF, or allied militaries, for a minimum of 3 years, or lost their life in service, to be eligible.

Veterans, or immediate relatives of deceased veterans, are asked to fill out a short questionnaire and provide a photo of their time in service. This material is used to construct the learning material for the student. After receiving the commemorative music, veterans, or relatives, are asked to provide a short message which can be shared with the student and their parents/guardians.

Veterans receive a copy of the commemorative music they inspired, along with a link to audio or video of the student performing the work. Following completion of the composition, students receive a short message from the individual who inspired the musical work.

With the right support and mentorship, we believe all students, regardless of musical experience, can take part. Canadian music students enrolled in private instrument instruction from Kindergarten to Grade 12 can take part in the program. This program is currently not offered to University music students, but will be at a future date.

No. All music produced through the project must be instrumental. We do this to avoid students trying to compose from the point of view of the veteran they are honouring. Instead, we encourage them to compose music that expresses their feelings of respect, gratitude, interest & acknowledgement of the individual for whom the work is dedicated. Students use the veteran provided photo and information as the source of inspiration.
